Gemma got her first taste of choreography at 13 when she competed in The Royal Ballet School Sir Kenneth Macmillan Choreographic Competition. From 2010 to the present, she has created works for prestigious ballet companies such as, American Ballet Theater, Atlanta Ballet, The Washington Ballet, and Ballet National de Cuba. Gemma’s choreography has also been shown at City Center’s Fall for Dance, The Erik Bruhn Competition, The Royal Opera House, The Joyce, Jacob’s Pillow, New York City Center, and the Metropolitan Opera House.
In 2014 She was awarded the fellowship grant from the New York Choreographic Institute (an affiliate of New York City Ballet) she has also received grants from the Virginia B. Toulmin foundation. The 2017-2018 New York City Center Choreography Fellow, the recipient of a 2017 Princess Grace award, 2018 winner of the Clive Barnes Foundation Award for choreography, and a 2020 Bessie for outstanding breakout choreographer. DANCE COMPOSITION CLASSES
During the pandemic Gemma was able to create a series of classes that address both the theory and practice of choreography. In these classes the students learn choreographic tools while creating their own works.
She’s had the great pleasure of teaching this system at American Ballet Theatre for the Studio Company, and also Kaatsbaan's Summer Intensive, and it’s been extremely rewarding.
